ALA is a fatty acid compound that occurs naturally in the human body in mitochondria and is involved in energy metabolism. ALA occurs in the form of two isomers S-ALA (which is chemically synthesized) and R-ALA which is produced by the body. Traditional chemical synthesis of alpha-lipoic acid produces a mixture of these two isomers. ALA is a powerful antioxidant that dissolves in both water and fat, thus neutralizes free radicals soluble in both water and fat. ALA significantly affects the renewal of other antioxidant resources - vitamin C, glutathione, coenzyme Q10 and indirectly vitamin E. Supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid shows benefits in various oxidative stress situations and various oxidative stress situations.
