Leek (Allium ampeloprasum L.) is a biennial species of the amaryllis family (the garlic subfamily) native to Asia Minor. This tasty and healthy vegetable was known and cultivated in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, and it came to Poland in the Middle Ages thanks to Queen Bona from Italy.
Leek is a plant rich in vitamins - A, from groups B, C, E and K - and minerals - calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc. It contains few calories, only about 30 in 100 g. Its regular consumption may show slimming, detoxifying properties, lowering blood pressure and preventing many diseases.
To make the leek more digestible, it is worthwhile to heat it.
