The common prickly shrub is a plant whose fruit is goji berries. It comes from central China, today it is more popular and cultivated in many regions of the world such as Tibet and Mongolia. In China, these berries have been used for thousands of years. These berries are small, approx. 2 cm red fruit. They can be eaten raw, but most often they are in dried form. Wine, tea and tinctures are also made from them. They taste quite tart and have 370 kcal in 100g. They will work as a separate snack or as an addition to sweet and dry dishes. Raw fruits can be boiled in water or added to soups, rice and sauces before consumption.
In their composition, goji berries have carotenoids that give them their color and positively affect the condition of the skin. Also polysaccharides, essential oils and fatty acids such as hexadecane, linoleic and myristic. We find in them such organic acids as apple, lemon, shikimic and fumaric. They can enrich our diet with minerals such as zinc, iron, calcium, copper, selenium and phosphorus. They contain group B vitamins, vitamin C and E. Thanks to having polysaccharides and polyphenols, they have antioxidant properties, i.e. they fight free radicals in our body. These tiny fruits are a treasury of nutritional values that positively affect the skin, rejuvenating it and supporting our immunity.
It is also worth highlighting their positive effect on the eyesight. It is thanks to the content of carotenoids, or more precisely, zeaxanthin, which is their majority and lutein. This connection protects the retina from damage that can occur through free radicals. Lutein by absorbing visible blue light protects our eye from the harmful effects of light and UV.
