Iron helps in the proper production of red blood cells and hemoglobin. It also contributes to the maintenance of normal psychological functions and the functioning of the immune system. Additionally, it reduces the feeling of tiredness and weariness. Vitamin C increases the absorption of iron.
During pregnancy, the need for iron is greater because the needs of the mother and the developing baby must be met, as well as the placenta's and increasing hemoglobin mass, especially in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. In nursing mothers, the increased demand is associated with the need to cover iron losses with the secreted milk.
Iron deficiency during pregnancy can cause very serious consequences, such as anemia, reduced fetal growth, impaired immunity, decreased concentration and physical function, and impaired fetal memory. It can also result in premature birth.
The team of the Polish Gynecological Society recommends iron supplementation to women who are trying to conceive, pregnant and breastfeeding, who are at risk of deficiencies of this component. When trying for a baby, the recommended dose is at least 18 mg, 26-27 mg during pregnancy and 20 mg during lactation.
