DESCRIPTION
Organic green tea from the mature leaves of the second and third harvest collected from the same bushes as Sencha leaves. Bancha is a popular tea for everyday use in Japan. Leaves from summer and autumn harvests, from which it is made naturally contain less caffeine (twice as much as Sencha or Gyokuro), less aromatic substances and more tannins, which gives Banchy its distinct taste. In Japan, it is often served with meals. Its relatively low caffeine content means that it is often drunk in the evening. A smaller amount of caffeine (or theine, as is often called this compound found in tea) also results in less bitterness of tea infusion compared to Sencha. The name Bancha comes from the words "ban" and "cha." "Cha" in Japanese is tea. The word "ban" (番) has a double meaning. It can be understood as the equivalent of what is "ordinary", "popular" or "everyday." In contrast, "ban" written as 晩 with the same pronunciation means "late" and refers to the late harvest from which the leaves of Banchy come from.
Bancha gained popularity in the Edo age and is today the second most-drunk green tea in Japan. There are more than 20 types of Banchy with different degrees of fermentation and originating in different regions. Bancha is a tea often recommended in the vegan diet because it is the richest source of iron of plant origin (38mg / 100g Banchy). Moya Bancha comes from small family crops in Kagoshima Prefecture on Kiushu Island.
