Hydrogen test for lactose intolerance in the Biogo dietary clinic

The lactose intolerance test is a hydrogen breath test performed in a dietary clinic in Wrocław. It allows you to check the process of digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, in this case lactose, by the body. The test measures the hydrogen level in the exhaled air on an empty stomach and after the patient consumes carbohydrates.
When saccharides are not properly digested in the gastrointestinal tract (e.g. due to a deficiency of digestive enzymes), the remainder is fermented in the large intestine. Hydrogen is the by-product of fermentation.

Lactose is milk sugar that is found mainly in milk and milk products. In the intestines, it is metabolized with the help of lactase. If the body produces too little of it, lactose is broken down by fermentation. The by-product of this process is the hydrogen measured in the exhaled air.

What does the examination look like?

The test is performed only stationary in the Biogo dietary office located at ul. Szewska 18. Initially, the dietitian performs a biological test - the patient, on an empty stomach, inhales deeply and then blows air into the measuring device, which measures the initial hydrogen level. Then the patient is given a lactose solution. The last step is taking samples at appropriate intervals (the number and frequency of sampling depends on the type of saccharides used). A corresponding increase in the level of hydrogen in the exhaled air compared to the biological test may indicate intolerance to a given saccharide.

Test duration: 120 minutes. Immediately after the examination, the Patient receives the test result along with its interpretation.
