Lemons are a species of plants from the rutaceae family, most likely formed by crossing a lime with a citron. This tart-tasting fruit comes from eastern China, but today it is no longer found in the wild or as a cultivated plant in these areas. Lemon came to Europe in the Middle Ages, presumably brought by Arab merchants.
These citruses, famous for their extraordinary amount of vitamin C, are a noteworthy source of vitamins and minerals. They can be proud of, among others content of B vitamins, vitamin E, beta-carotene, they are also rich in iron, sodium, potassium and magnesium. Due to the strong antioxidants present in the flesh, lemon can show anti-aging properties and prevent the development of diseases.
Lemon juice is used both in the kitchen - e.g. as an additive to teas or as an odor neutralizer and seasoning for fish - and in cosmetics - it has a mild toning, refreshing, deodorizing and antiseptic effect.
Sometimes confused with limes, green lemons are distinguished from their yellow sisters by a slightly smaller fruit size, less acidity and a juicy green peel.
