Sodium hydroxide can be found under the names: Caustic soda, caustic soda, sodium hydroxide, caustic soda.
Solid sodium hydroxide is a white crystalline substance. It is hygroscopic and easily combines with carbon dioxide from the air (forming a coating of sodium carbonate). Keep it tightly closed. It dissolves very well in water, releasing significant amounts of heat and forming sodium lye, i.e. an odorless, colorless, non-flammable liquid which reacts with acids, non-metal oxides and amphoteric hydroxides, forming sodium salts. It is slippery to the touch and causes burns. It is corrosive to metals, especially in the presence of moisture. It easily reacts with metals having amphoteric properties, releasing hydrogen (e.g. with aluminum and zirconium, forming respectively aluminates and zirconates). Forms salts with weak organic acids (e.g. phenols and nitromethane). Under the influence of NaOH, non-metals are disproportionated (e.g. white phosphorus boiled with a NaOH solution gives phosphorus and phosphate, and sulfur dissolves in a NaOH solution to form sulfide and sulfite).

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Caustic soda is used as an ingredient in preparations for unblocking sewage pipes. It also participates in the production of soap, water glass from silica, dyes and artificial silk. In addition, it is used in the production of rubber, water treatment for industrial purposes and in the paper industry.
